Douglas Stewart settled in Australia in 1938 and was literary editor of the Bulletin from 1940 to 1961. He published five volumes of poetry, as well as plays for stage and radio, biographies of Norman Lindsay and Kenneth Slessor, and several volumes of literary criticism. He is best known for the verse-drama Fire on the Snow, about the ill-fated Scott expedition to the Antarctic, which was first produced on radio in 1941 and has become recognised as a radio classic. Stewart was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1979.
